Storm Prediction Center

We use this site to monitor all sorts of upcoming weather outlooks. This site also shows storm reports, current weather watches and warnings, and has an archive of all weather events to explore and compare. This is one of the key sites we use to gain as much information as we can about the weather over the next 3-5 days.

College of Dupage

We use this page here to monitor weather models and help us make forecasts for the upcoming few days. These models help us have an understanding of what the weather will do pretty accurately out about 7-10 days.

Pivotal Weather

This site helps us with weather models too. It is a wonderful alternate to COD weather, and often we use them hand in hand

Tornado Titans

This site has exceptional tutorials in learning the fundamentals of storm chasing, identifying parts of a storm, live radar, and some great in-depth videos of thunderstorm development and how to read skew-t’s.

Spotter Network

In order to place spotter reports, we all went through the Spotter Network training courses. These courses are among the best resources for learning to identify different parts of thunderstorms, how they work, and what to watch out for. Spotter Network does require you to make an account, but it is so worth it to learn all there is to know. It is free as well, so it is accessible to anyone. This and Skywarn are two of the best resources to give you.

Skywarn Training

Skywarn is a course that is very similar to the Spotter Network. You can now take it online or contact your NWS office to see where and when they have a public course. Upon completion of this course, you will get a Skywarn spotter card. This course is also free of charge whether it is in person or if it is online. Highly recommend!!!

Always monitor your local news stations and National Weather Service Office for up to the minute weather coverage as well!!

If you feel you have a bit of an in-depth knowledge of weather and would like to look at more advanced materials, please contact us and we will provide you with some deeper resources.

Apps We Use to Storm Chase

Click on the Logos to learn more!

This is the radar app of choice for Michigan Storm Chasers. It offers two plans, a 9.99 per year or a 99.99 per year (or 29.99 computer app) and you will receive numerous different tools to assist you in watching radar to see how a storm is behaving. Radarscope also links up with Spotter Network too, so you could see our locations and your location if you became a spotter!

Radarscope

This is a newer and up and coming radar app. It provides multiple different tools to use to track radar, and also has live chaser options so you can see where people are under storms. It can be connected to live feeds of what they’re chasing as well.

Radar Omega

We use twitter to communicate quickly and efficiently with multiple chat and chaser groups relaying storm information, damage reports, and as many pictures as we can. We also have direct lines to the NWS office that we are near in order to give them eyes under the storm. It is the fastest way to get information our accurately and quickly and reach many people.

Twitter

Zello is a walkie-talkie app that we use directly with each other while we are storm chasing. It’s not safe to be texting or messaging other chasers while driving and take our eyes off the road, so we use this app to communicate longer distances than our Midland Radios will carry.

Zello

Satsquatch is a satellite app that we use to monitor storm development and different features that only satellite can provide us with.
